Climate Justice Survey Analysis

Survey Analysis & Next Steps

Outline

Provide metrics to support the creation of climate justice legislation.

  • Problem: Current legislation does not protect marginalized communities during extreme weather conditions.

  • Solution: A report that provides actionable insights for climate justice, aiding the work of lobbyists, non-profits, and government entities.

  • Tools: Microsoft Excel, OpenRefine, JMP Pro 17

Client

The county passed a resolution affirming the support for environmental justice and directed county offices to assess the current state of environmental justice. The organization collaborated with Tahn Analytics to complete a quantitative and qualitative analysis of survey data that would include a coding manual for future reference. Coding needs to identify keywords and ideas common across responses, grouped into concepts. The final product should include a data file sufficient to enable reanalysis, an extraction of main themes, data frequencies and visualizations.

Problem: Policies create disproportionate environmental exposure to low-income populations.

The qualitative and quantitative analysis explores the perceptions and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color community members living in the county. The study collected short essay responses to survey questions gathered from a diverse sample of residents. The analysis focused on main themes and provided avenues for policy intervention and community-based solutions.

Solution: Create a Detailed Report with Actionable Insights

To identify main themes, we utilize analysis software and perform manual analysis.

  • Create initial coding manual

  • Examine the codes, then revise and consolidate into themes

  • Present themes in a unified and coherent manner

Result: Detailed Climate Justice Report with Actionable Insights

The client was aware that marginalized communities are unproportionally affected by extreme temperatures. The analysis provides potential avenues for legislative policy intervention and community-based solutions. And emphasized the need to expand access and communication services and resources. Organizations distributing services and resources must pay attention to the intersecting social and economic factors that contribute to environmental inequalities.
